FILL + BALANCE FLASH

Posted by Matt Cloud

HERE'S conditioning @ Hulett House Martial Arts. Rob Hulett on the left, featured fighter Kevin Croom on top in the center. Failed attempt at balance flash, as Rob's all lit up. Granted, all these images have are unsharp mask and some cropping, this one would probably look better B&W with levels, burning here, dodging there, and some curves. Love those curves.

Capen Park, ladies and gentlemen. Let's all give Tiff Craig of KC a hand for not dying out there on a windy day.

Color Correction

Here we have the original AND the finished project. Only color correction - no levels. Used Curves. Clearly, I need to step up the flash work. Be prepared, Catalin, for an influx of images this week.

BOO FLASH! Or me. Probably me.

METAL!

This is a snare drum done in dark field. It makes me feel cold yet sexy.

This is how I lit it. Notice Sergei, the studio DJ getting down with his sick jams in the back.

Directions a la' MapQuest

Thanks to Mapquest, here are directions AND a map. I'm in Apt. A. No using this to send anthrax letters or stalk me. That's not very polite.

Classmate Portrait

Posted by Matt Cloud

This is my classmate Ivy Ashe, whose portrait I took. As you can see, the saturation and exposure were just a bit off. It's too bad we can't adjust levels. However, it was one of the few times where she wasn't smiling. I asked her about why she liked photography and about her home state of Connecticut and she dropped the pose.

I was shooting for Rembrandt lighting. I had one softbox at a 45 degree angle to her set up high to eliminate any glare on her glasses. To her right for fill I had a white reflector. Behind her was another strobe pointed to reflect off the floor covered by a blue gel. I had to keep stopping it down to keep her blonde hair from glowing.

So, I'm not timely with this thing

Dear Clint:

You've made it clear that I do not often (Ever?) update this blog. I could throw around some excuses, like the fact that the language on this site here in HK is in traditional characters so I'm just guessing at what I'm writing. I could say that I'm just too busy with the internship stuff or with wandering around SE Asia. But Clint, that wouldn't be fair to you. You deserve better. You deserve my thoughts. It's selfish for to think that it's a silly exercise and that the masses don't want to hear my thoughts, opinions, anecdotes, or see my photos. You let me know I was wrong. Everyone wants, nay, burns for it. Expect to see many more posting in the future, and as I'm probably lying in boldface verdana right now, feel free to call me on it.

Heart,
The Gweilo
